Perspectives on Western and Russian Approaches to Counterinsurgency
Abstract
Given the overwhelming similarity of conditions facing counterinsurgents, even in conflicts that might look superficially quite different, this study uses a cross-case synthesis approach to delineate the primary features of contemporary Western versus Russian approaches to counterinsurgency. The article aims to elucidate the differences and commonalities between the Western and Russian approaches thereby enhancing understanding of the role of coercion and co-option in counterinsurgency warfare.
