Burkhard Meissner, Helmut-Schmidt University

After graduation in 1978 Burkhard Meissner did his military service and then studied the subjects of history, philosophy,Slavic Studies, Ancient Greek philology and Classical Archaeology at the Universities of Kiel , Tübingen , Oxford and Heidelberg , and spent many semesters as a fellow of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (the Scholarship Foundation of the German people). Graduating in 1984, his thesis appeared in 1992 in the series Zetemata under the title Historians between City and Royal Court: Studies of the Position of Historian in the Greek Society in late Classical and early Hellenistic Period. Meissner then worked many years as a research assistant at the Institute of Ancient History at the University of Darmstadt and from 1990 to 1991 as a research assistant in Erlangen . He worked Part-time on programming projects and gave cello lessons. From 1992 to 1993, he went abroad as a visiting lecturer at the University La Sapienza in Rome. From 1993 to 1997 he was a research assistant at Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg . From 1997 to 2003 Meissner worked as senior assistant in Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg. He also taught at the Universities of Bielefeld and Leipzig. From 2003 to 2004 he served on the Halle research staff. In 2004 he was promoted to associate professor. In the same year, he accepted an appointment as professor of ancient history at the Helmut-Schmidt University of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg, where he teaches and conducts research. In 2004 and 2006 he served as Gerda Henkel Scholar and Visiting Associate Professor of Classics at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Iceland.
