Colonel Alain Gauthier joined the Royal 22nd Regiment in 1980 as a soldier and served successively in the 2nd Battalion Royal 22nd Regiment and the Canadian Airborne Regiment. Promu au grade de caporal-chef, il demande son transfert au sein du corps des officiers et obtient sa commission en 1985. Promoted to corporal, he requested a transfer within the officer corps and was commissioned in 1985. Il occupe un poste de commandant de peloton au 2e R22eR à Québec et au 1er R22eR en Allemagne, avant d'être sélectionné à titre d'instructeur à l'École d'Infanterie de Gagetown en 1989. He served as a platoon commander in 2nd R22eR in Quebec and 1 R22eR in Germany, before being selected as an instructor at the Infantry School in Gagetown in 1989. Il retourne au 2e Bataillon Royal 22e Régiment à titre de commandant adjoint de compagnie où il fait un premier déploiement en Bosnie-Herzégovine. He returned to the 2nd Battalion Royal 22nd Regiment as the Deputy Commander of company where he was first deployed in Bosnia-Herzegovina. De 1994 à 1996, il complète un baccalauréat en administration des affaires à son l'Université Laval. From 1994 to 1996, he completed a Bachelor of Business Administration at the University Laval. Il retourne ensuite au 2e R22eR à titre d'officier des opérations. He then returned to the 2nd R22eR as an operations officer. Durant cette période, il est déployé en assistance aux autorités civiles dans le cadre des inondations de Winnipeg et de la tempête de verglas du Québec, en plus de compléter une mission opérationnelle en Haïti. During this period, he deployed to assist civil authorities in the Winnipeg floods and ice storm in Quebec, in addition to complete an operational mission in Haiti. Promu au grade de major en 1998, il commande pendant deux ans la compagnie de parachutistes du 3e R22eR avec laquelle il est déployé au Timor Oriental. Promoted to Major in 1998, he commanded for two years the company of paratroopers from the 3rd R22eR with which he deployed to East Timor. A son retour, il complète le cours de commandement et d'état-major de Toronto et complète une maîtrise en études de la défense pour être ensuite assigné au poste de commandant adjoint du 2e R22eR. On his return, he attended Command and General Staff of Toronto and completed a Masters in Defence Studies and is then assigned to the post of deputy commander of the 2nd R22eR. En 2002, il retourne en Bosnie-Herzégovine. In 2002 he returned to Bosnia-Herzegovina. Il est ensuite muté au Quartier général du 5e Groupe-brigade mécanisé du Canada à Valcartier où il occupe le poste de G3. It is then transferred to Headquarters of the 5th Mechanized Brigade Group in Valcartier where he served as G3. Promu au grade de lieutenant-colonel en 2003, il est muté au Quartier général de la Défense nationale à Ottawa où il occupe successivement les postes d'aviseur politique pour la région du Proche-Orient, conseiller spécial auprès du Chef d'état-major de la Défense, membre de l'équipe de transformation des Forces canadiennes et planificateur stratégique au sein de l'état-major interarmées stratégique. Promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 2003, he was transferred to headquarters of National Defence in Ottawa where he served successively as political advisor for the Near East, Special Advisor to the Chief of Staff Defense team member of Canadian Forces transformation and strategic planner in the Joint Staff strategic. Il obtient une maîtrise en droit de la guerre. He obtained a Master of Laws from the war. Le colonel Gauthier prend le commandement du 3e Bataillon Royal 22e Régiment le 8 juin 2006 et est déployé en Afghanistan à titre de Commandant du groupement–tactique d'août 2007 jusqu'a mars 2008. Colonel Gauthier took command of 3rd Battalion Royal 22nd Regiment, June 8, 2006 and is deployed in Afghanistan as Commander-group tactics from August 2007 until March 2008. Il muté au Quartier général de la Défense nationale à Ottawa en juillet 2008 où il occupe le poste de chef de cabinet pour le Vice-chef d'état-major de la Défense. He transferred to Headquarters of National Defence in Ottawa in July 2008 where he served as Chief of Staff to the Vice Chief of Staff of Defense. Il est promu au grade de colonel en février 2009 et occupe depuis ce temps le poste de J3 COMFEC. He was promoted to colonel in February 2009 and held since that time the position of CEFCOM J3.
