Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Author Guidelines

Academic Book Reviews. Please utilize the standard format for academic reviews (a third summarizing the book’s content, a third comparing the book to other sources and placing it generally in the field, and a third stating your opinion of the book—its usefulness and application). These submissions are not subject to the referred double-blind review process; please submit by email directly to the Student Editor. Include authors’ full names, affiliations, and contact information at the top of the manuscript submitted. Word doc. manuscripts should be double-spaced in 12-point font, Times New Roman, and not exceed 1200 words, including quotations and references.

Narrative Matters. Education Matters will also accept submissions of personal narratives and poetry related to individual research journeys, graduate student issues, and education in general. These submissions are not subject to the referred double-blind review process, but are presented directly by email to the General Managing Editor for consideration by the Editorial Review Board. Please include authors’ full names, affiliations, and contact information at the top of the manuscript submitted. Word doc. manuscripts should be double-spaced in 12-point font, Times New Roman, including quotations and references, except for poetry manuscripts which should be single-spaced.

Articles. Education Matters welcomes submissions of research-based manuscripts that make significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge and understanding in education, broadly defined. Articles published are primarily reports of original, rigorously conducted research employing diverse methods, and disciplinary perspectives within qualitative, quantitative, or mixed method studies. Pilot studies, and other research efforts of limited scope or duration, may be considered for publication if they have a visible trajectory leading towards clear implications for further study. Submit as for a standard refereed double-blind review process.

All article submissions must be prepared as blind electronic files for uploading to Education Matters Manuscript Central, the online manuscript tracking system. In addition to withholding authors’ names from the body of the articles submitted, submissions must demonstrate APA style, as outlined in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association ( 6th ed.). Word doc. manuscripts should be double-spaced in 12-point font, Times New Roman, including quotations and references, and with standard 1” margins. Headings and subheadings in APA format should be liberally used to indicate the organization of the manuscript.

Prepare the manuscript files for articles in accordance with the following guidelines:

  • Abstract of no more than 250 words. The abstract should be succinctly written in adherence to APA style and should avoid long sentences and acronyms. The editors maintain the right to edit and revise abstracts, as needed.
  • One blind copy of the manuscript in Word format, to be uploaded as the “Manuscript File.” No author names should appear in the bylines or as references, replacing with “Author(s), (year)” both in text and in reference list.
  • Graphics, such as charts, tables, and photographs (when appropriate) should be placed within the text of the submitted document in the desired size and position.
  • Research must be completed in accordance with Tri Council Ethics or the equivalent (a checkbox in this regard is included in the submission process)

Other considerations.

  • Disclosure. In accordance with APA guidelines, EM requires that all authors provide “notice of any interests that might be seen as influencing the research.”
  • Copyright and permissions: (Standard copyright procedures apply)
  • Multiple submissions. Manuscripts submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere are not considered.
  • General length requirements: 20 pages (5000 words) or less (including references); submissions will be returned that exceed this length.
