Focus and Scope
The Canadian Journal for New Scholars in Education/ Revue Canadienne des jeunes chercheures et chercheurs en éducation (CJNSE/RCJCÉ) is a non-masked peer reviewed journal sponsored by the Canadian Society for the Study of Education/La Société Canadienne pour l'étude de l'éducation (CSSE/SCÉÉ), and the Canadian Committee of Graduate Students in Education/Le comité Canadien des étudiants diplômés en éducation (CCGSE/CCÉDÉ); the latter is the graduate student caucus within Canada’s national network of educational researchers. CJNSE/RCJCE is solely managed by graduate students with the participation of faculty advisory editors, who are members of the editorial board. CJNSE/ RCJCE’s mandate is to give graduate students studying in Canada opportunities for:
- Learning essential steps for future publishing with masked peer-reviewed journals,
- Receiving mentorship through the publishing process by the editorial team,
- Gaining valuable publication experience,
- Disseminating their work in a bilingual online journal, and
- Connecting with other graduate students and their work.
Peer Review Process
CJNSE/RCJCÉ is a non-masked peer-reviewed journal, and as such does not require manuscripts be submitted with a masked title page. Authors are mentored through the publishing process by the editorial team. Authors must include their name(s) and full contact information on the title page of their manuscript. If a manuscript has multiple authors, a lead author must be designated as the person with whom the Review Editor will correspond throughout the review/manuscript development process.
The journal accepts manuscripts on an ongoing basis. There are generally two issues published each year.
Open Access Policy
The CJNSE/RCJCE is an open access journal: all articles and reviews will be immediately and permanently free for everyone to read, download, and share. There is no fee which needs to be paid by the authors or on their behalf (e.g. by their research funder or institution) to submit to the journal. Permitted third party (re)use is defined by the following Creative Commons user licenses.
Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY)
Anyone can a) distribute, copy, review, and cite the article; b) create extracts, abstracts, and other revised versions; c) create adaptations or derivative works of or from an article or a review (such as a translation); d) include the article in a collective work (such as an anthology); e) data mine the article as long as they credit the author(s) and the journal; f) acknowledge that they do not represent the author as endorsing their adaptation of the article; and g) they do not modify the article in such a way as to damage the author's honor or reputation and/or the journal and/or the affiliated institution.
Our ethical policies attempt to protect the rights of the ideas and works of authors as well as the CJNSE/RCJCE. The CJNSE/RCJCE is not liable for the completeness, accuracy, or usefulness of any information on the CJNSE/RCJCE website.
- All articles and views presented in CJNSE/RCJCE are those of the contributors.
- If evidence of plagiarism, duplicate publication, falsified data and/or information arises from submissions, CJNSE/RCJCE will notify the audience.
- Articles, content, materials, symbols, and design presented on the CJNSE/RCJCE website have different copyrights.
- Copyrights of all articles remain with the authors and first publication rights with CJNSE/RCJCE. Use and reproduction rights of any articles or abstracts on the CJNSE/RCJCE website are granted for individual, non-commercial, and educational purposes only, and if properly cited for electronic materials. Otherwise, permission must be obtained from the CJNSE/RCJCE or the authors.

Call for Papers
CJNSE/RCJCÉ publishes electronically twice annually in the Spring and Fall. The journal accepts submissions on an on-going basis with deadlines in the Summer and Winter of each year.
Roles Within CJNSE/RCJCÈ
Members of the Editorial Team are hired as volunteers by the incoming Managing Editor for one-year terms at the end of each calendar year.
Oversees journal production.
Responsible for promoting CJNSE in a variety of venues.
Performs all aspects of volunteer management.
Assists Managing Editor oversee journal production.
Manages social media presence.
Expected to transition to Managing Editor in the following year.
Senior Copy Editor
Manages a small team of Associate Copyeditors.
Maintains copyediting work process including updates to guidelines.
Communicates with authors/copyeditors on needed changes; reviews final works for web publication.
Serves as a Review Mentor 1-2 times a year.
Associate Copy Editor
Works diligently with the author(s) to edit and correct articles before publication.
Adheres to CJNSE copyediting guidelines.
Provides clear and prompt communication with the Senior Copyeditor and the author(s) on required edits.
The "Review Team" consists of individuals who do not have formal positions with CJNSE (with Senior Copy Editors being the exception). Instead, these individuals are asked by the Managing Editor on an as-needed basis based on their research interests, skills, and knowledges.
- A graduate student (Masters or doctoral) who reads a manuscript that meets the base requirements for publishing with CJNSE, assessing it for coherence (e.g., argument, methodology, theoretical framework, and style), adherence to APA Style, as well as being on a topic of relevance to graduate student readers.
Reviewers are asked to review a manuscript by the Managing Editor, who uses the CJNSE reviewer database to find matches between potential reviewers’ research interests and the key terms listed on submitted manuscripts.
A graduate student (Masters or doctoral) who acts as a resource for authors in interpreting reviewer comments, identifying useful resources, providing constructive feedback on how to strengthen their manuscript, and offers encouragement.
Review Mentors are asked by the Managing Editor to do this task based on research interests listed in the CJNSE reviewer database, the effectiveness of the reviews they complete for manuscripts, and upon recommendation from faculty members.
Senior Review Editor
The Senior Review Editor is responsible for examining a manuscript after it has gone through the editing process with the Review Mentor to ensure that there are no theoretical or methodological holes, argumentation is logical and cohesive, there is adequate coverage of the academic literature on the topic, and the manuscript is fit to publish at the graduate student level.
Senior Review Editors are individuals who have completed their doctoral degree and have experience in academic publishing; they are often faculty members at Canadian universities, though sometimes they may also be post-doctoral fellows and international faculty members.
Potential Senior Review Editors are contacted directly on a case-by-case basis by the Managing Editor.
Senior Review Board
The Senior Review Board provides guidance to the Managing Editor for the overall direction of the journal; they also approve of new policies or changes to existing policies.
