Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • Material in the submission does not infringe upon anyone else’s copyright. (See "Copyrighted Materials" in the Author Guidelines below.)
  • If documenting a SoTL project, it has been successfully reviewed according to the institution’s research ethics committee guidelines.
  • The manuscript follows the Author Guidelines (below). All formatting and layout, punctuation, and citations adhere to the TLI  Style Guide for Authors
  • All authors have made significant contributions to this work, in keeping with the TLI Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement .

    Contributors who meet ALL of the criteria below should be considered authors; other contributions may be acknowledged in the paper.
    1. Substantial contribution to the idea or design of the work; or data gathering, analysis, or interpretation, AND
    2. Writing the work or critically revising it AND
    3. Approving the final version for publication; AND
    4. Being accountable for the accuracy or integrity of their contributions to the work.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF file format.
  • Identifying information, including meta data in comments, etc. has been removed to allow for an anonymous peer review.
  • If submitting supplementary files, files adhere to the guidelines for file size (max. 90 MB) and format.
  • Authors are required to notify the editors and provide retractions or corrections of mistakes promptly

Author Guidelines

To be considered for publication in Teaching & Learning Inquiry, manuscripts, in whole or part, may not have been previously published or be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere in either article or review form. 

File Type: Complete manuscripts, in English, should be submitted electronically as a single Word document or equivalent. We cannot accept PDF submissions. Supplemental materials may be separate files (see below for details), but manuscripts should be submitted a single file.

Style, Layout, & Formatting: For details about layout, formatting, citation, punctuation, and illustrations/figures/tables, see our detailed TLI Style Guide for Authors.  Before a manuscript can go to copyediting, authors should apply this style guide to avoid delays.

Length:  Consult our Focus and Scope section for length specifications by genre.

Anonymized manuscriptAuthors are responsible for removing any identifying information from their manuscripts that may allow a reviewer to discern their identity or affiliations. All submitted documents should mask the author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s).  Different versions of Word and similar software require different steps to do this; please consult the help files of the software you are using. Any metadata added through the electronic system will be shared only with the journal’s editorial staff. In the copyediting phase, authors will then add identifying information that was redacted for original submission.

Author contact information: If there are multiple authors, please appoint one as the corresponding author who will be responsible for all exchanges with the TLI editorial staff. In Step 3 of the submission process, authors will be asked to add names, email, affiliations, and a brief biographical note (approximately 1 sentence) for ALL authors. 

For each author, please indicate family name (surname) in the Comments to the Editor section of submission to ensure our precision in other areas of the journal, indexing, etc.

Supplementary Files, Data, or Multimedia: TLI encourages the submission of supplementary materials that take advantage of the online environment to incorporate elements beyond text.

During the submission process, you have the option of adding supplementary files, such as audio or video files related to your work. (Tables, figures, and other such illustrations should be inserted into the text, rather than submitted as supplementary files. This allows reviewers to see all relevant submission materials.)  Files should not exceed 90 MB in size. For other supplementary files or other types of multimedia-based submissions such as simulations, audio materials, or games, please contact the Editorial Manager (tli@issotl.com) for information on preferred formats and file sizes.

Copyrighted Materials: Authors are responsible for obtaining permission for any copyrighted material used, including illustrations, and will be asked to provide formal written permission upon acceptance for publication. Authors are expected to adhere to the standards for intellectual property rights and plagiarism, and authors assume full responsibility for the content of their submissions.

Disclosure: In accordance with APA guidelines, TLI requires that all authors provide “notice of any interests that might be seen as influencing the research.”

Copyright Notice

Authors who publish with Teaching & Learning Inquiry agree to the following terms:

  1. Authors retain copyright and grant Teaching & Learning Inquiry right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License, (CC-BY) 4.0 International, allowing others to share the work with proper acknowledgement and citation of the work's authorship and initial publication in Teaching & Learning Inquiry.
  2. Authors are able to enter separate, additional contractual agreements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in Teaching & Learning Inquiry.
  3. In pursuit of manuscripts of the highest quality, multiple opportunities for mentoring, and greater reach and citation of TLI publications, TLI encourages authors to share their drafts to seek feedback from relevant communities unless the manuscript is already under review or in the publication queue after being accepted.  In other words, to be eligible for publication in TLI, manuscripts should not be shared publicly (e.g., online)
    • while under review (after being initially submitted, or after being revised and resubmitted for reconsideration), or
    • upon notice of acceptance and before publication.

    Once published, authors are strongly encouraged to share the published version widely, with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in Teaching & Learning Inquiry. (See The Effect of Open Access.)

Pieces documenting completed SoTL projects, such as theoretical or scholarly essays, systematic reflections, syntheses of literature, or reports on the field (3,000-7,000 words)

Dialogue

Informed responses to articles in previous issues (1,500-5,000 words)

Systematic reflection through creative products (1,000-8,000 words)

TLI Reviews

Reviews of books, external articles, web resources, or conferences (1,000-3,000 words)

TLI Privacy Statement
The data collected from registered and non-registered users of this journal falls within the scope of the standard functioning of peer-reviewed journals. It includes information that makes communication possible for the editorial process; it is used to informs readers about the authorship and editing of content; it enables collecting aggregated data on readership behaviors, as well as tracking geopolitical and social elements of scholarly communication.

This journal’s editorial team uses this data to guide its work in publishing and improving this journal. Data that will assist in developing this publishing platform may be shared with its developer Public Knowledge Project in an anonymized and aggregated form, with appropriate exceptions such as article metrics. The data will not be sold by this journal or PKP nor will it be used for purposes other than those stated here. The authors published in this journal are responsible for the human subject data that figures in the research reported here.
